Coeliac UK is the leading charity working for people with coeliac diseaseA condition where a person is unable to eat gluten as it makes their body attack itself.  and dermatitis herpetiformisUsually shortened to DH, this is a form of coeliac disease where the skin is affected with small blisters. (DH). Our mission is to improve the lives of people with coeliac disease through support, campaigning and research.

We want to see the needs of people with coeliac diseaseA condition where a person is unable to eat gluten as it makes their body attack itself. and DH recognised by everyone and met in their everyday lives.

We do this by:

  • providing expert and independent information to help people manage their health and diet
  • campaigning on their behalf to improve access to fast diagnosis, good medical treatment and safe foods - in the home and out
  • and researching new treatments and the possibilities of a cure.

Anyone who has been medically diagnosed with coeliac disease can join the Charity. We have 60,000 Members and 1,200 newly diagnosed Members join us each month.

Crossed GrainOur magazine which is published three times a year. magazine is sent out three times a year to all Members. It is a lively, vibrant magazine packed full of practical advice and inspirational features written by our team of dedicated experts.

eXGOur online email newsletter which is sent to our Members each month. is our monthly online newsletter and contains the latest news, medical updates and the Food and Drink Directory updates.

Other online services include our venue guide listing your favourite places to eat and our recipe database with hundreds of delicious recipes.

We also provide a range of publications, some of which are free of charge to Members or to buy from our shop.

Our network of hardworking volunteers offer community support with a range of events and talks.

 Campaigning

  • We talk to key opinion formers in the food manufacturing and food service sector to influence food labelling and availability of gluten-free food.
  • We work with the media to get coverage of coeliac disease both nationally and regionally and in doing so, raise awareness amongst the general public - particularly during our annual Awareness WeekOur main annual campaign with focuses around a theme to raise awareness about coeliac disease. .
  • With the help of our All Party Parliamentary Group (APPGThe All Party Parliamentary Group on Coeliac Disease and DH is a special interest group in Parliament in Westminster which MPs and Peers can join. It allows a forum for issues affecting people with coeliac disease to be discussed. ) in Westminister, the Cross Party GroupCross Party Group on coeliac disease and DH in Scottish Parliament and also the Welsh Assembly is a special interest group which MSPs and WAMs can join. We are on this Group as a means of exerting pressure on Parliament. in the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly Cross Party Group, we campaign to get coeliac disease and DH on the political agenda and to influence attitudes within government.
  • We network with key opinion formers within primary and secondary healthcare such as GPsGeneral Practitioner, or local doctor, dietitians and gastroenterologists, to improve the rate of diagnosis and management of coeliac disease.

Research

We fund medical research into all aspects of coeliac disease. In 2005 we financed one of the biggest research programmes into coeliac disease and DH ever commissioned in the world - research that is now bearing fruit.

We are not Government-funded. Our Members pay a small fee to contribute to the costs of the services they receive but we still depend on donations and other fundraising activities to be able to undertake our work. We hope that you will want to support our work by providing regular donations, no matter how small.
