A growing market

We are always keen to talk to companies who are interested in producing and selling gluten-free food as we maintain strong links with key organisations in the industry.

Over the last five years, the retail market for gluten-free foods has grown dramatically. Today, a wide range of ‘Free-From’ foods are available in supermarkets and other retail outlets around the country. Whether frozen, chilled or ambient - ranging from Yorkshire puddings to pitta and naan breads, the choice available is always growing.

According to the Mintel report from January 2006, gluten-free in retail was estimated to be worth around £48 million per year. It is by far the biggest sector of the ‘Free From’ category.

We have over 1,000 new Members joining us each month, adding to the 53,000 Members we have already. People with coeliac diseaseA condition where a person is unable to eat gluten as it makes their body attack itself. are the core gluten-free consumers as the gluten-free diet is the only medical treatment for people with coeliac disease.

The latest research highlights that 1 in 100 people have coeliac disease and thanks to increased diagnosis and awareness, the numbers of people being diagnosed is increasing every year.

Availability of gluten-free foods

People with coeliac disease source their gluten-free products from the ‘Free From’ aisles in the major supermarkets, as well as other independent outlets, health food stores and online shops. The range and availability is better than ever. People with coeliac disease are also entitled to some gluten-free foods on prescription. For information on how to apply to get your products available on prescription, please visit the NHS PASA (purchasing and supply agency) website.

Not just ‘Free From’

‘Free From’ alternatives have undoubtedly contributed to a greater variety in the gluten-free diet. However, such products are often more expensive than the standard variety. So, other everyday foods that are naturally gluten-free are also vital ingredients for people with coeliac disease.  We know that the following components are all important to those following a gluten-free diet:

  • availability of gluten-free foods when out and about
  • being able to choose safely from a wide range of products
  • clear labelling
  • value for money
  • nutritionally balanced products.
