10 Years diagnosed this year 💛! I like many, was diagnosed with IBS for years before a blood test for Coeliac Disease was offered. Unfortunately I was given the wrong blood results so by the time it was picked up that I required a gut biopsy I had already begun eating gluten free (to try and make myself feel better). This hampered an official diagnosis by biopsy as I wasn't told to keep eating normally but due to my blood results being so high a probable diagnosis was made to prevent me having to go back onto a gluten diet to then biopsy my gut a second time. I faced many stumbling blocks during my diagnosis journey, I can only hope that now the process is better and that less people struggle for diagnosis. It is still difficult trying to get others to understand what Coeliac disease is and that no I can't just eat that cake as a one off (as much as I would love to 😫) but there has been mass improvements in the 10 years since I was diagnosed and I can only hope one day for a cure so I can enjoy a real buttery or choose anything I want off a menu once again!
There are a wide range of symptoms associated with coeliac disease, so it's not always easy to diagnose. The average time to diagnosis for adults from onset of symptoms is an alarming 13 years. Our coeliac awareness campaign aims to change that by raising awareness of the wide range of symptoms and encouraging people to take our free online self-assessment if they spot something that sounds like them. You may have been previously diagnosed with IBS, or may put your symptoms down to some other issue like the day to day stresses of life. Finding out the cause of the symptoms not only provides answers, but we often hear that it's a huge relief as people now know there's something they can do to feel better.
