Establishing the nutritional status of allergic children in the UK

Although every dietitianAn expert in food and nutrition. knows that children with food allergies are at risk of an impaired nutritional status, very little data has been published on this topic.

In light of the UK’s high prevalence of childhood food allergy, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and the Academy for Paediatric Gastroenterology would like to establish the nutritional status of children with confirmed (newly diagnosed or established) food allergies. As such they would like to propose an Allergy Anthropometrics Week from the 12th to 18th September 2011. During this week, they are hoping that dietitians will document the following information of patients they see in their allergy clinics:

  • age of the child (months)

  • gender

  • type of food allergy (IgE, non IgE and mixed) and affecting gastrointestinal tract, respiratory system and/or skin

  • foods eliminated

  • weight

  • length/height

  • head circumference (< 2 years of age).

For more information about the survey, see the attached invitation.
