Coeliac UK dietitians out and about

Coeliac UK dietitians have been out and about in the last few months presenting on coeliac disease and the new gluten regulation.

On the 1st October, we were invited to talk at the North West North West BDABritish Dietetic Association - the professional association for dietitians in the UK. meeting in Warrington.

On the 10th November, we were invited to a Gastro study day in Salisbury for newly qualified dietitians in the South West. The meeting had speakers on various Gastro topics and included case studies.

On the 17th November, we were invited to present to the West Midlands group of the BDA at Good Hope Hospital in Birmingham.

On the 25th November, we were invited to present to dietitians at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

These events were a great opportunity to meet dietitians working in the field and answer questions on how the new labelling laws will affect advice given to people with coeliac disease.

Post graduate and under graduate training on coeliac disease

Coeliac UK have recently worked with Kings College, London to provide lectures to post graduate and under graduate nutrition and dietetic students.

In November, Lorna Carr dietitian from Coeliac UK, presented an hour lecture on coeliac disease, looking at symptoms, associated conditions, prevalence and diagnosis. This was followed by a second lecture on the management of coeliac disease, focusing on the gluten-free diet, allergen labelling and treatment of associated conditions including osteoporosis.

Gastro 2009

Coeliac UK had an exhibition stand at Gastro 2009 in London’s ExCel centre, which ran from 22 - 25 November.  This provided a great forum for discussion with clinicians from Gastro 2009around the world and allowed us to continue with our campaign to raise awareness of coeliac disease.

This was a great opportunity for discussion with healthcare professionals and renowned gastroenterologists from all over the world and featured a wide array of varied and interesting presentations and seminars for the benefit of the public and professionals.

The launch involved a Public Health Day on Sunday 22 November with guest speakers on coeliac disease, Professor Chris Mulder from The Netherlands  and Professor David Sanders from Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, and proceeded with a professional programme and symposia from Monday 23 until Wednesday 25 November.

We also took the chance to give out some gluten-free goody bags to give delegates a sample of gluten-free food.
