Coeliac Disease Update Seminar for Dietitians

Coeliac Disease Update : An Overview of Management: 9th July 2007

The course is aimed at dietitians who would like to develop their knowledge and skill base in coeliac disease management. It is suitable for any dietitians who see coeliac patients and those who are interested in setting up dietitian-led coeliac clinics.

10.30 am  Overview of coeliac disease:
Prevalence, symptoms, diagnosis and new developments

11.00 am  Life on the inside: A patient's perspective
Dawn McAllister, mother of a child diagnosed with coeliac disease

11.30 am  Management of coeliac disease and associated conditions
To include guidelines from the BSG, ESPHGAN, BSPGHAN
This session is not intended to cover the practicalities of the diet, rather the guidelines for diagnosis, management, etc.

12.00 noon  Practical guide to the gluten- free diet
 What is gluten-free?  Codex wheat starch, malt extract, oats, spelt, labelling, cooking and contamination, eating out, travelling, prescriptions, supplements.

Discussion in groups around local resources - attendees to bring along local diet sheets/coeliac packs and discuss in small groups.
