New Food Labelling Legislation Published

New food labelling and composition rules aimed at helping people who are intolerant to glutenA protein that is found in the cereals wheat, barley and rye. have just been published in the European Commissions Official Journal.

Food businesses will have until January 2012 to comply with the new requirements.

This legislation is based on the new Codex standardThe standard by which gluten-free foods are measured. All gluten-free products need to get to below a certain limit to be considered either gluten-free or very low gluten. which was agreed in July 2008.

Coeliac UK will be working with manufacturers and the Food Standards Agency to keep Members informed about these changes and the effect that they will have on people who are glutenA protein that is found in the cereals wheat, barley and rye. intolerant.
