Gluten Free prescribing consultation by NHS Buckinghamshire CCG

17 October 2019

NHS Buckinghamshire clinical commissioning group (CCG) have launched a consultation on proposed changes to gluten free prescribing. The CCG are asking local people to share their views by responding to the survey.

Under the CCG’s current guidance, GPs are recommended that they can prescribe eight units per month of gluten free bread and flour mixes. The CCG is proposing to stop the prescribing of gluten free food for most people and is considering vulnerable groups of people who would be considered an exception to the policy.

Coeliac UK communication with the CCG

We are concerned by the proposal and have shared evidence with the CCG around the increased cost and limited availability of gluten free staple foods and their role in supporting management and adherence to the gluten free diet.

Research shows that gluten free staple foods are not readily available to purchase in budget supermarkets and convenience stores and that gluten free staple foods are 3-4 times more expensive than gluten containing equivalents.

Have your say

The consultation will close on 11 December and we would encourage you to respond to the consultation to make sure your voice is heard.

We would also encourage you to write to your local MP, we have a sample letter on our website which you can use and adapt to your own circumstances.
