Vitamin D during the coronavirus pandemic

22 April 2020

A healthy, balanced gluten free diet is important for people with coeliac disease to maintain good health. Vitamin D is essential nutrient which has an important role in keeping bones, teeth and muscles healthy.

The body creates vitamin D from sunlight on the skin and there are also some foods sources too including oily fish, eggs and fortified foods. From early April to the end of September, most people are usually able to get enough vitamin D from sunlight to meet requirements.

There is no evidence that vitamin D reduces the risk of coronavirus but during the coronavirus pandemic, many of us will be spending more time indoors and therefore may not be getting enough vitamin D from sunlight. Everyone in the general population aged 4 years and older therefore may wish to consider taking 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day.
