Thank you for supporting #ShineALightOnCoeliac!

For Coeliac UK’s Awareness Week 2021, we asked you to shine a light on coeliac disease, to help children and young people feel more confident about living gluten free – and you really stepped up to the challenge! Here are our highlights from the week…

Monday

Coeliac UK Ambassador and MasterChef Champion, Jane Devonshire kicked off the week with her launch video, explaining what why we want to #ShineALightOnCoeliac to support children and young people, and how you could get involved.

We also released the results of our latest poll on eating out post lockdown. Over a third of respondents (36%), said their biggest concern when eating at a friend or family’s house was being an inconvenience, nearly half (48%) were most worried about being accidentally 'glutened', and nearly 60% of people said they were less confident - compared to before the pandemic - in finding gluten free venues. So there couldn’t be a better time to raise awareness!

Tuesday

AW gallery

As part of the week we asked you to take on a challenge and help us reach our £50,000 fundraising target to support children and young people – by being as bold and BRIGHT as possible!

By Tuesday you’d already shared some fantastic photos of your efforts. From baking, to running, to taking a different activity for each day of the week – it was great to see you get involved.

We shared your photos in our Facebook #ShineALightOnCoeliac Stars gallery. See if you can spot yourself in the gallery!

Jane Devonshire returned on Wednesday for a sparkly cupcake cook-along video – a great introduction to baking gluten free for those with coeliac disease and their friends and family.

We invited you to share photos of your cupcakes for the chance to win Jane’s new cookbook, Vegetarian Hassle Free Gluten Free. Congratulations to Sarah who sent in the below pic of her son George enjoying his cupcakes!

Saturday

On Saturday morning, Coeliac UK’s CEO Hilary Croft shared our campaign with Amy Oakden on BBC Radio Teeside, one of many interviews we took part in throughout the week to help #ShineALightOnCoeliac across the media. Listen to the interview again on BBC Sounds (fast forward to 2 hours 19 minutes).

Sunday

Felix

We ended the week with a video from Felix, who told us how support from friends and school can make a difference to young people with coeliac disease.

Felix is just one of the brave young people who shared their stories with us throughout Awareness Week, helping to bring our campaign to life and show the real impact our work can have.

Read all of their stories.
