What it really means to volunteer with Coeliac UK

To celebrate Volunteers’ Week 2021, Director of Membership and Services, Annette Woolman shares her view of what it means to volunteer with us.

Annette Woolman“It’s a busy world and there’s plenty going on at Coeliac UK! Thankfully our volunteers are always ready and willing to offer their help where it’s needed most.

“The truth is, we don’t expect this but without their unwavering support we would not be able to achieve what we have for our community, especially since the pandemic began in early 2020. It’s shown us how important community is in the most challenging of times.

“Now this doesn’t mean volunteering with Coeliac UK is a full time job! There are so many different ways to volunteer around the time you have to give. Whether you have a few minutes to spend on social media, a couple of hours to give someone a call, or a few days to train for a challenge, there’s something for everyone. And if you have more time, there are a range of events and local group support activities that would welcome your help, not to mention our special interest groups and committees that help shape our information and support.

“All of these have such a valuable impact and can make a real difference in preventing someone from feeling alone and isolated.”

Why volunteer?

“Our volunteers join us for many different reasons. You might want to make a difference, learn a new skill, give back, or build on existing knowledge.

“Whatever your reason, Coeliac UK will always:

  • Give you time - to decide the right volunteering role for you and any necessary training you need to enjoy it.
  • Provide connections - whether it’s a contact within the Volunteer team or an opportunity to meet fellow volunteers. We know how important it is in your volunteer experience to have the right support.
  • Make it fun - from a meal out after an event, to online meet ups, or sometimes the opportunity to trial something before it’s launched, we make volunteering fun. Plus, our friendly Volunteer Coordinator Sian is guaranteed to make you smile every time!
  • Say thank you - we can’t say it enough, but we do our best to ensure our volunteers know how much they’re appreciated.

“If you’re thinking about volunteering with Coeliac UK then we’d love to have you on board. Our virtual Volunteers’ Open Week will hopefully give some insights into the volunteering opportunities we have to offer and the positive experiences our volunteers have had. We look forward to hearing from you!”
