FAQ

Will the decision to restrict the items on prescription in England have any consequences for Scotland/Wales/Northern Ireland?

This is a positive outcome for England and in line with the strong commitment by the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland parliaments to retain gluten free prescriptions for patients with coeliac disease.

In Scotland decisions on health are devolved to the Parliament in Edinburgh and there is a strong commitment from the Scottish Government and NHS Scotland to maintain gluten free prescriptions for patients with coeliac disease.

Health is also a devolved matter in Wales. This mean that decisions on health are made in the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff Bay. There remains a strong and consistent commitment from the Welsh Government and NHS Wales to maintain gluten free prescriptions in line with National Prescribing guidelines.

Gluten free food on prescription is currently not restricted in Northern Ireland.

Coeliac UK will monitor the situation and keep our community informed of any changes.
