The UK’s national charity for people who need to live without gluten.

About us

For over 50 years, we have been the experts on coeliac disease and the gluten free diet. We are an independent charity helping people to live well, gluten free. We do this by providing our 65,000 plus members with trustworthy advice and support, funding critical research into coeliac disease, working with healthcare professionals to improve diagnosis and fighting for better availability of gluten free food. And we do it all so that one day, no one’s life will be limited by gluten. We have offices in England, Scotland and Wales. We are not Government funded and rely on our Members and the generosity of our fundraisers and supporters to continue our work. We want to see the needs of people with coeliac disease and DH recognised by everyone and met in their everyday lives. We do this by: - providing expert and independent information to help people manage their health and diet - campaigning on their behalf to improve access to fast diagnosis, good medical treatment and safe foods - in the home and out - researching new treatments and the possibilities of a cure. Coeliac UK staff work in diverse roles ranging from dietetic advice, campaigning to database management. To find out more about opportunities at the Charity please contact: generalenquiries@coeliac.org.uk As the gluten free diet is the only medical treatment for people with coeliac disease, we are always keen to talk to companies who are interested in producing and selling gluten free food. If you would like to discuss ways in which we could work together or if you want to find out more, please contact our Commercial Team at marketing@coeliac.org.uk who will be pleased to help.

There are a wide range of symptoms associated with coeliac disease, so it's not always easy to diagnose. The average time to diagnosis for adults from onset of symptoms is an alarming 13 years.  Our coeliac awareness campaign aims to change that by raising awareness of the wide range of symptoms and encouraging people to take our free online self-assessment if they spot something that sounds like them.  You may have been previously diagnosed with IBS, or may put your symptoms down to some other issue like the day to day stresses of life. Finding out the cause of the symptoms not only provides answers, but we often hear that it's a huge relief as people now know there's something they can do to feel better.  To find out more and take the self-assessment to see if you should be tested go to our campaign web page: https://lnkd.in/ejSdX5Ry #CoeliacAwarenessMonth #IBS #IrritableBowelSyndrome #Anaemia #CoeliacDisease

Having Shared on various other platforms it felt right to share here too Coeliac UK #coeliacawarenessmonth IT’S COELIAC AWARENESS MONTH!! 1 in 100 people in the UK have coeliac disease. Only 36% of people with coeliac disease are diagnosed. There are an estimated 500,000 people in the UK 🇬🇧 living with undiagnosed coeliac disease. Coeliac disease is a SERIOUS autoimmune condition. When someone with coeliac disease eats gluten, their body attacks its own tissues and causes gut damage. Coeliac UK’s online self-assessment tool is the first step towards diagnosis and feeling better. Symptoms are wide ranging including; sickness, diarrhoea, stomach pain, bloating, extreme fatigue, mouth ulcers, skin rash, tooth enamel problems, liver abnormalities, unexplained infertility (male & female), recurrent miscarriage, osteoporosis, neurological problems and slow growth in children. #coeliacdisease #coeliacawareness #coeliacuk #coeliacawarenessweek

Coeliac Awareness Month 2024 🍔🍔 As many of you know, both myself and Pam Brown are both coeliac. I was diagnosed in December 2016 having been unwell for 6 months prior and testing negative on a blood test for coeliac. I was diagnosed through the fact I went privately and had an operation/investigations for the fact they believed I had something wrong with my overaries rather than my bowel. This operation led to a diagnosis of Coeliac. Pam Brown was diagnosed in January 2021 and it is believed the menopause triggered the start of this condition. 1 in 100 people in the UK have coeliac disease, but only 36% are diagnosed. That leaves a staggering 500,000 people suffering with unexplained symptoms. The main symptoms: • Persistent or unexplained nausea • Recurrent stomach pain, cramping or bloating • Tiredness • Anaemia • Mouth ulcers • Skin rash (Dermatitis Herpetiformis) • Bowel changes • Liver abnormalities … & lots more. For myself, when I had gluten or when I accidentally have gluten now.. I can only describe it as my whole body being on fire. It feels like my blood is boiling and very flu like symptoms (sounds weird, I know) For my mum, she felt like her body was attacking itself all day, everyday Having been on a gluten free diet for many years now… I’ve found the best alternatives to what I miss the most but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to walk into a bakery again to the smell of freshly baked crusty bread or a warm croissant 🥐 The biggest misconception surrounding coeliac is the fact it’s an allergy/ intolerance or choice!! It’s neither of these. It’s an autoimmune condition where our bodies literally attack themselves when they eat gluten! Please get tested if you think you may be coeliac (before starting a gluten free diet!!) We are here if anyone has any questions or if you are coeliac and have any good recommendations- please let us know!!💕 Have a lovely day all x Pam Brown Joe Brown Vicky Rock Coeliac UK #coeliacstories

Meet Mita, whose journey to a diagnosis was marked by years of confusion and struggle. From a young age, she experienced severe symptoms that worsened as she reached adulthood, impacting her daily life and mental health. Despite numerous visits to doctors, her concerns were dismissed as stress and painful periods. It wasn't until she was hospitalised and underwent endoscopy and biopsy that she finally received a diagnosis of coeliac disease. This revelation brought immense relief and reignited her passion for cooking, allowing her to enjoy her favourite foods like roti again. If you're experiencing similar symptoms, don't dismiss them. It could be coeliac disease. Visit: https://lnkd.in/ev-TMMKe for more information and to take the online self-assessment. #CoeliacStories #CoeliacAwarenessMonth #CoeliacDisease #Coeliac #CoeliacUK

A medical diagnosis of coeliac disease not only changed my life but also had a huge impact on my family. A diagnosis of coeliac disease isn't as straightforward as it may seem and in my situation it set off a whole other chain of circumstances. During the testing process and when I was diagnosed, it was discovered I also had osteopenia and was completely deficient in IGA deficiency. Not only had I now to adapt to a completely new diet living gluten free, I also had to process the news that the calcium absorption problems experienced before diagnosis had affected my bone health. This was hard to take when I was still in my twenties. IGA deficiency was also something I had never heard of (IgA deficiency is a condition where the body doesn't produce enough immunoglobulin A (IgA), a type of antibody that helps fight infections. This can make people more prone to infections, ). This caused me lots of worry and affected me mentally particularly in the early days of COVID-19! I adapted though and as mentioned in my earlier post, got back to good health. This is where testing is key though. I noticed after my diagnosis a lot signs similar to my symptoms in my dad. I mentioned to him frequently to get tested as there was an increased chance of family also having coeliac disease. He eventually got the blood test and biopsy and got diagnosed at age 60. Fast forward to last year and my sister has also now been diagnosed. My advice is to persevere with your healthcare professional, push for testing with family members if you recognise symptoms and please try and keep gluten in your diet when in the testing process! We might be struggling for support within the NHS at the moment but the diagnosis is also important if you start experiencing other health issues and on your overall health. I think my story shows how important that diagnosis can be! It could not only impact your life but those who we love around us! #CoeliacStories #CoeliacAwarenessMonth
