Suzie on volunteering at our office
Since her daughter was diagnosed with coeliac disease, Suzie Beaumont has been giving her time to help out in our High Wycombe office.
Our daughter Charli was diagnosed with coeliac disease in late 2013, having returned home ill at the end of her first month away at university.
We joined Coeliac UK as family members shortly afterwards and on browsing the website found that their headquarters, based in High Wycombe and not far from home, were looking for Office Volunteers. I've always given some of my time to various local charities as feel it's often just as valuable as a financial donation and after a chat with the Head of Volunteering, Miranda, started helping out with administrative work two afternoons a week, for an initial period of six weeks.
I must be enjoying it as I am still there nearly two years later!
The tasks have been really varied and no two weeks are ever the same - ranging from envelope stuffing to helping with more detailed research work on venues, the website and entering results of various questionnaires sent out to Members. I love working there and felt right at home from my first week, it's a very special place filled with some great people, many of whom I now consider friends. Not only does it feel like a proper job for a very worthwhile cause but helps keep my skills up to date. I've learned so much more about the disease during my time there too, which has been invaluable.
The staff have made me so welcome and my enjoyment must be contagious as Charli worked there during her summer break last year and had a great time! I know we would both thoroughly recommend the experience.
