gluten ataxia

Gluten ataxia is one of a number of neurological manifestations of coeliac disease and can be present even if there is no gut damage. Ataxia is caused by damage to the brain which can lead to an inability to move accurately, causing clumsiness, incoordination leading to falls, slurred speech and sometimes jumpy vision. A strict gluten free diet is the treatment for gluten ataxia. However the response to treatment depends on the duration. Prompt treatment is more likely to result in improvement or stabilisation.
