Gluten free on the move app

Our app is available in the App Store for iOS devices and in the Google Play Store for Android devices.

Gluten free on the moveManaging your gluten free diet while out and about can be a challenge as our increasingly busy lifestyles mean we're doing more on the hop.

Our smartphone app, Gluten free on the move, aims to help you manage every element of your gluten free diet, whether it's shopping for food or finding somewhere to eat out.

The app includes access to the Food and Drink Directory and you can scan items as you shop to see if they are suitable for your gluten free diet and listed in our Directory, search through the additions and deletions in real time, use the gluten free checklist to help you search through a product's ingredients list and more.

The Venue Guide will use the location services on your phone so you can search for venues where you are. You can see which venues we've accredited too, so you know who has worked with us.

There is also a wealth of other information on the app including a label guide, eating out tips and news from Coeliac UK.

The app for iOS devices is available in the App Store and for Android devices in the Google Play Store.

Who can use the app?

Anyone can download the app and use its free services which include:

  • a label guide to help you understand food labelling
  • gluten free checklist
  • eating out tips
  • the latest news from Coeliac UK, including food alerts.

You must be a member of the charity to access the app’s other services:

  • our Food and Drink Directory which lists thousands of suitable products and the ability to scan barcodes on products to see if they are listed in the Directory
  • our Venue Guide with over 7,000 venues.

The app works on the following phones:

  • iPhone 4 and above
  • Android smartphones that can download apps – for example Samsung Galaxy. See our full list of supported devices.

Using the app on an iPad, iPad mini, iPod

You can download the app to your iPad following these instructions:

  • change your settings in the app store to show 'iPhone only'
  • search for Coeliac UK gluten free on the move.

As the app is developed for iPhone it will work on an iPad but there may be issues with formatting so we’d recommend instead using our electronic Food and Drink Directory by logging in to our website via Safari on your iPad.

Windows phones and Blackberry smartphones

Developing the app for each device requires additional investment. We have chosen to launch the app for the iPhone and Android because our membership surveys indicate that these devices are the most commonly used. However, as ever with new technology, the situation is constantly changing and we will be monitoring trends to assess when investment in new platforms for the app is justified, including Windows phones and Blackberry smartphones.

For more information, read our FAQs on the app.

Getting started

  • Make sure your phone has internet access through WiFi, 4G or 3G.
  • On your phone, visit the Apple store (if you have an iPhone) or the Google Play Store (if you have an Android phone) and search for ‘Coeliac UK gluten free on the move’.
  • Download and install the app.
  • Once downloaded, open the app and select the login button at the top right hand corner. Enter the same login details as your Coeliac UK website account. If you have not yet created login details for our website, find out how to do this.

Hints and tips

  • You will need to be connected to the Internet via 4G or 3G when searching the Food and Drink Directory in the app unless you have previously downloaded all data to your device. Some supermarkets have poor Internet signal so you need to ensure you have connected before you use the app on the go.
So you're ready to use the app on the move:
  1. Make sure you’re connected to a strong WiFi network
  2. Log in to the app and visit the Food and Drink Directory
  3. Tap the ‘Download’ button at the top right hand side of the screen.

The above steps will download all current food and drink products, so you don't need to be connected to the internet when you're next out shopping.

As with updates to the hard copy Food and Drink Directory, updates are also uploaded onto the app. To make sure you always have the most up to date information, we recommend that you download Food and Drink Directory items regularly by completing the steps above.

  • You need to be connected to the Internet via WiFi, 4G or 3G when searching the venue guide unless you have previously downloaded all data to your device.
So you're ready to use the app on the move:
  1. Make sure you’re connected to a strong WiFi network
  2. Log in to the app and visit the Venue Guide
  3. Tap the ‘Download’ button at the top right hand side of the screen.
  • Internet connection is needed for app updates, so try to do the updates on your phone when you’re connected to WiFi for optimum performance. The same goes for submitting a venue recommendation and sending us an email via the app.

Push notifications

Push notifications will be used to provide you with important updates, such as food alerts, so it's really useful for you to have these allowed for the app. You can find out more about these notifications and how to switch them on in the FAQs.
