Festive drinks

Alcohol usually takes a part over the festive season. Cider, champagne, wine, sherry, spirits, port and liqueurs are gluten free.

Experts agree that even when a cereal containing gluten has been used there is no physical way pure distilled alcohol can contain gluten because the gluten protein cannot travel through to the vapour produced by the prolonged heating in the distillation process and become part of the final alcohol product.

Mulled Fruit Mocktail

This is a smashing mocktail recipe that is a great alternative to mulled wine.

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 8 minutes

Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 500ml Pomegrante Juice
  • 375ml orange juice
  • 250ml grapefruit juice
  • 125ml water
  • 75ml sugar
  • 8 cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 apple, sliced

Method

  1. In a saucepan combine all the juices, the sugar and water, cinnamon stick and allspice
  2. Bring to a slow boil. Remove the cloves, cinnamon
  3. Pour into your serving glasses and garnish with the apple slices.

Drivers Punch

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 8 minutes

Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 100ml cranberry juice
  • 500ml orange juice
  • 2 limes
  • 1 orange
  • 100g frozen cranberry
  • 4 fresh mint sprigs
  • 600ml sparkling water or soda

Method

  1. Mix the cranberry juice in a large jug with the orange and the juice from one lime. Slice the other lime and the orange
  2. To serve, put the slices of limes and orange, cranberries and a mint sprig in each glass, then pour in the mixed fruit juices and top up with sparkling water or soda.

Christmas Gin and Cranberry Fizz

Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 100ml gin
  • 2 sprigs fresh thyme
  • 100ml cranberry juice
  • 500ml prosecco
  • 4 lime wedges
  • ice

 Method

  1. Pour the gin into a bowl. Add the thyme and mix to bruise the leaves and release their flavour
  2. Remove the thyme leaves and discard. Add the cranberry juices to the gin, then stir in the prosecco. Pour into glasses with ice. Garnish with lime wedges.

God Father

Serves 1

Ingredients

  • 1 measure of Scotch whisky
  • 1 measure of amaretto liqueur

Method

  1. Mix the Scotch and Amaretto in an old fashioned glass with ice cubes
  2. Stir well.
