Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) is a small beady grain with a nutty flavour and firm texture. Naturally gluten free, quinoa is often referred to as a 'supergrain' due to it's many health benefits.
Unlike substitutes like rice and couscous, quinoa is a complete protein and contains all of the body's essential amino acids. It is packed with fibre which makes it perfect for a gluten free diet where it can be hard to get enough fibre. It is also high in magnesium and iron which help keep your nervous system and muscles healthy.
Preparation and cooking:
Like rice and couscous, quinoa is easy to prepare with a fluffy texture and makes a great alternative. Make sure to be careful when measuring out portions of quinoa as it quadruples in size when cooking. Rinse or soak quinoa before cooking then add to boiling water and simmer in a covered pan for around 15 minutes. It should have a slight bite to it.
Store cooked quinoa in an airtight container in the fridge.
Quinoa is available in precooked microwaveable packets which can be purchased from your local supermarket*. The quinoa can be added cold to salads or popped in the microwave to heat up before serving.
