July 2021 Newsletter

Any replies should be sent directly to me at edinburgh@coeliac.org.uk

Welcome to our July 2021 Newsletter for the Edinburgh Group by way of keeping in touch with our Edinburgh group members.  I do hope you have kept as well as possible over the last 18 months and are starting to look forward to a new chapter.

Ahead of forming this newsletter, I have kept myself enlightened with updates from the Scottish Government website of current Covid restrictions in Scotland, which changes are in the pipeline, how this will affect our day to day living and preparing for the future.  Good news is that all of Scotland is in Level 0 from today 19th July, although there will still be safety measures in place for a while yet.  I assume many of you, like me, are exhausted in keeping up with it all!

All I can say regarding face to face meet ups with our Edinburgh Group is that we are still unable to make plans for these types of meetings at the moment.  As all local support groups of the devolved nations fall under Coeliac UK (based in High Wycombe), we need to comply with their instructions and regulations as well as the Government ones, especially regarding holding face to face meetings during these Covid times.

So, with all of the above in mind, all I can say is please bear with us by continuing with your membership of Coeliac UK, thus being a member of our Edinburgh Group who can give you local support in one way or another.

Plans for the remainder of 2021

27th and 31st July 2021; New Members Coffee & Chat (by Zoom)

Shortly, members who have joined Coeliac UK and are affiliated to our Edinburgh Group since the last Coffee & Chat held on 4th May will be sent an invitation to join our committee for a getting to know you informal event held online by Zoom.   These types of Zoom chats have been very successful for the newly diagnosed members, especially since our face to face ones have not been allowed to go ahead.    If you missed any of the other New Members Coffee & Chats so far during 2021 and would like to join us, please email me at edinburgh@coeliac.org.uk the dates and times are

Tuesday 27th July at 7.30pm and again on Saturday 31st July at 11am

This is for New Members only and once I receive your note of interest, I will send an email nearer the time with the zoom log in details for joining which should not be passed on to anyone else.

Saturday 4th Sept; Getting Inspiration on Your Gluten Free Diet (by Zoom)

Lorna Gardner, dietitian from Coeliac UK, will be joining the Edinburgh local group online zoom meeting at 1.30pm on 4 September.

She will be presenting on; Getting inspiration on your gluten free diet

Whether newly diagnosed with coeliac disease or if you have been gluten free for a while or are supporting a friend or relative, getting inspiration to support you in living gluten free can be a great support. In this presentation Lorna will discuss the benefits of the gluten free diet and ways to get more variety in your diet. She will also cover any new resources, developments and research at Coeliac UK.

Places are limited so book a place by emailing me at edinburgh@coeliac.org.uk

Once booked, I will send an email nearer the time with the zoom log in details for joining which should not be passed on to anyone else.

Saturday 30th October OR Saturday 6th November

Ask the Expert Talk by Tristan Humphreys of Coeliac UK

Pending restrictions by the Government and also the event venue, this event will either be held by Zoom or by face to face.  Further details will be confirmed to our members once we have an update regarding any restrictions at that time.

Tristan Humphreys is the Devolved Nations Lead for Coeliac UK and is very much looking forward to giving a talk to our Edinburgh Group members.

Please mark both dates in your diary in the meantime and I do hope you will give Tristan a big Edinburgh Group welcome whether it be by Zoom or at the venue.

It may be that places will be limited but you can book a place by emailing me nearer the time at edinburgh@coeliac.org.uk

December (date tbc);  GF Christmas Dinner at the Apprentice Restaurant

Once again, pending restrictions by the Government, Granton College and the Apprentice Restaurant, our annual event pre Covid may or may not go ahead this year.

In the interim, a booking has been pencilled in with our contact who said they are not sure what this year will look like yet for the restaurant and so it is difficult to take any bookings with certainty.  She said the number of classes on campus had been severely restricted so they were not going to open the restaurant at all before the Summer.   Members will be notified by me once further information is to hand.

Newsletters; by email or post?

Thank you to all who responded to my request in our last Newsletter and ecommunication, when I asked our members, to save on group expenses how they would like their communications sent from our Edinburgh group?  Just to put you in the picture of responses received;

Most members wanted their communication sent only by email.  This allows those members to receive a Monthly Update from our group by ecommunication.

A small percentage wanted their newsletter sent by post and have either sent as requested some Stamped Addressed Envelopes or more for their three editions which are sent out each year.  These members are not or do not use email. Thank you to those members for your Stamped Addressed Envelopes.

A smaller still percentage would like an email copy and a paper copy and have given a donation to our group both to fund this and to help towards the running of the group.

A lot of members did not reply so I can only assume they do not want a paper copy.

A few envelopes containing the last newsletter were returned marked Addressee gone away.

This has been a good exercise which has allowed our group to continue to use donations from our members wisely for such expenses!

Junk Box emails

To those members receiving communication from our Edinburgh group by email, please remember to continually check your Junk Box.   Otherwise you will miss out on not only our Monthly Updates but also correspondence from Coeliac UK.  You can unsubscribe anytime!

Donations to the Edinburgh Group of Coeliac UK

Many thanks to all who have sent our group a donation so far during 2021.  As you can imagine, our income for the group has drastically fallen over the last 18 months but fortunately we have had smaller outgoings during this pandemic.  However, we are worried as to how we will continue to hold our meetings in 2022 in the way we have in the past so please, if you can even in a small way, donate to our Edinburgh Group this year to give our bank balance the boost that it definitely needs to allow us to plan for 2022.

Ways to Donate to the Edinburgh Group directly;

By BACS transfer; Account name:  Coeliac UK-Edinburgh Group, Sort Code 30-94-28, Account No. 62979168.  Please reference your payment with DON, your surname and postcode

To post a cheque; please make payable to (Coeliac UK-Edinburgh Group.

Please download and complete our donation form at Edinburgh Groups 2021 Donation & Updating Your Records Form and post to:

Until next time, take care,

Kind regards

Wilma Fraser; Group Organiser of Coeliac UK-Edinburgh Group
