We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2013 Gluten-free Chef of the Year competition.

Thomas FallowsThomas Fallows from Burnley, Lancashire. Thomas is the Assistant Chef at Hindelini’s Gourmet Café in Ribblesdale Park and is studying Professional Cookery Level 2 VRQ at Accrington and Rossendale College.

Up and coming Gluten-free Chef of the Year finalist

Due to injury in the first few moments of the live final, unfortunately finalist Aaron Bosdet-Kitchener from Northampton, Northamptonshire, had to pull out of the competition. Aaron is studying Certificate Culinary Skills Level 2 at Northampton college, view Aaron's menu.

For the fourth year, the competition was run in association with the Institute of Hospitality and the Craft Guild of Chefs with the judging panel being headed up by Michelin-starred chef Adam Gray from London restaurant Skylon, chef Daniel Ayton from Crowne Plaza and Malcolm Emery from Sodexo.

 

The competition

The competition was for professional cooks and catering college students to design a three course gluten-free meal for two people. Entrants’ menus had to include at least two courses which include a gluten-free element, such as pasta, pastry, sponge, cake, bread, batter etc which were made from scratch on the day of the live cook off. The event took place at the Unilever Food Solutions Culinary Business Development Centre, Leatherhead on 19 November 2013.

The categories

The competition comprised two categories: ‘Gluten-free Chef of the Year’ for those who cook for a living and are over 23 and the ‘Up and Coming Gluten-free Chef of the Year’ for those who are training and under 23.

Up and Coming GF ChefUp and Coming Gluten-free Chef of the Year

A week long stage at Michelin-starred The Pass at South Lodge with chef Matt Gillan, with accommodation included.

 

Additional prizes, kindly provided by Sodexo and 3663, include generous gift vouchers and knives, and all finalists will receive a year’s Membership to the Craft Guild of Chefs.
