Gluten Free Bread and flour mixes no longer available on prescription from March 2026
Following a review in 2025, the Coventry & Warwickshire ICB has taken the decision to remove gluten free prescribing for patients with coeliac disease from 31st March 2026 onwards.
Coeliac UK is deeply concerned by the potential impact of the decision, particularly for those who are vulnerable or on low incomes. The ICB has not yet suggested any meaningful mitigations to address the financial impact on those affected. In addition, contrary to the ICB’s statement, the gluten free diet is the recognised treatment for coeliac disease; you cannot simply switch to rice and potatoes for both practical and nutritional reasons. We made this clear in our consultation response, but this has not been reflected in their subsequent communications. Please rest assured that we will do all we can to hold the ICB to account and push for a review of this ill-considered decision.
If you are struggling on your gluten free diet, you should speak to your GP or healthcare team. It is at your GP’s discretion to prescribe where they feel there is a clinical need even if this is outside the local policy.
