Prescription policy results for your area

From 1 March 2026, gluten-free bread and flour mix will only to be available on NHS prescription for people aged under 25. Prescribing for adults aged 25 and over will no longer continue after this date.

Gluten Free Bread and flour mixes available to under 25s only from March 2026

Following a review in 2025, the North East and North Cumbria ICB has taken the decision to remove gluten free prescribing for patients with coeliac disease aged 25 and over. For those under 25, you can continue to access gluten free bread and flour on prescription via your GP. To find out more about units and products available click here.

If you are struggling on your gluten free diet, you should speak to your GP or healthcare team. It is at your GP’s discretion to prescribe where they feel there is a clinical need even if this is outside the local policy.

Prescription Charges

In England, most people have to pay for prescriptions. However, some individuals may be eligible for free prescriptions. You can check your eligibility on the NHS website.

For gluten free prescriptions items, a single prescription charge usually applies to each product type/brand (e.g., multiple loaves of the same bread incur a single charge).
