Prescriptions South Yorkshire

Prescription policy results for your area

NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) has taken the decision stop the routine prescribing of gluten free bread and mixes (except for the most at risk of clinical harm by not adhering to a gluten free diet).

We have been informed that the ICB will be writing to clinicians in the first instance, and subsequently, providing further information for those patients currently being issued with gluten free prescriptions in the coming weeks. We are urgently seeking further information on how and when this policy will come into effect.

Gluten Free Bread and flour mixes no longer available on prescription

Following a review in 2025, South Yorkshire ICB has taken the decision to remove gluten free prescribing for patients with coeliac disease. We are awaiting details and when and how this will be implemented.

Coeliac UK is deeply concerned by the potential impact of the decision, particularly for those who are vulnerable or on low incomes. The ICB has not yet provided any clarity over how or when this policy will come into effect nor has it outlined how it will ensure those ‘most at risk’ will continue to be supported.

If you are struggling on your gluten free diet, you should speak to your GP or healthcare team. It is at your GP’s discretion to prescribe where they feel there is a clinical need even if this is outside the local policy.
