Coeliac UK has been awarded a grant of £9,430 from Nationwide Building Society to update its popular seven-day gluten free budget meal planner, a vital resource for people living with coeliac disease and those following a strict gluten free diet.
The grant was made possible thanks to a nomination from Nationwide employee Laura, whose support has ensured the charity can refresh and expand a tool that has already made a significant impact. Since its launch in 2018, the planner has been downloaded more than 70,000 times, helping thousands of households create cost effective, nutritious meals at a time when gluten free staples come at a much higher price than their non gluten free equivalents.
The funding will enable Coeliac UK to:
Redesign and update artwork, with plans to create a more appealing A5 booklet and interactive online page-turner.
Refresh website copy and resources to ensure clarity and accessibility.
Develop new recipes, including seven everyday dishes plus a bonus “fakeaway” treat-night recipe.
Add iron-rich food guidance, detailing iron content in each meal. While fibre, fruit/veg portions, and calcium are already tracked, iron information will now be included - an important addition given that around a quarter of adults with coeliac disease are diagnosed with iron deficiency anaemia.
Expand meal plan flexibility, offering adaptations for one adult, families of four, and those following vegetarian, vegan, or lactose free diets.
Caroline Norris, Supporter Relationship Manager at Coeliac UK, said:
“We are thrilled that Nationwide considered us for this grant, and to be told we had been awarded £9,430 was amazing. We are so grateful that Laura took the initiative to nominate Coeliac UK, and we know this update will help so many people. The refreshed meal planner will be a lasting resource we can promote for years to come.”
Coeliac UK continues to champion research and resources that make living gluten free easier and more affordable. The updated meal planner will not only provide practical support but also empower individuals and families to maintain a balanced diet without compromising on cost or variety.
