Food Standards Committee

The Food Standards Committee advises the Board of Governors on food legislation and technical issues to ensure that the Charity’s food information and standards are up to date. The Committee includes experts from the food industry with relevant experience in research, policy development, regulatory affairs and legislation, including representatives from the manufacturing, retailing and catering industries.

Claire Andrews - Chair of the Food Standards Committee, Coeliac UK Board of Governors

Claire AndrewsClaire Andrews is a barrister at Gough Square Chambers. Called to the Bar in 1979, Claire advises and acts for businesses, consumers and enforcers on consumer related and regulatory issues. Claire specialises particularly in food law and food hygiene, product safety, advertising and labelling. She was recently appointed as the general editor of Butterworth's Law of Food and Drink, and is a qualified arbitrator and mediator. Additionally Claire sits as a First Tier Tribunal judge in the Health and Social Care Chamber. Claire has been a Coeliac UK Governor since 2015 and is currently Vice Chair of the Food Standards Committee.

Dr. Chun-Han Chan - Food Standards Agency

CHCChun-Han has post graduate qualifications in medical microbiology (MSc) and molecular bacteriology (PhD) and left the world of academics and research to join the Food Standards Agency in 2003. She managed the microbiological food surveillance programme as well as providing expert advice on zoonotic diseases and the risk to the food chain. Since 2008 she has been a member of the FSA’s Food Allergy & Intolerance Branch leading on the science areas of allergen thresholds, analysis of allergens in food to underpin the policy around the adventitious presence of allergens in prepacked food. Bringing together the principles of science into policy; Chun-Han currently leads on a diverse portfolio of work covering implementation of food allergen legislation, risk assessments for food allergen incidents, allergen thresholds and analytical methods for allergens.

René Crevel - Science Leader, Allergy & Immunology, Unilever

Rene FSCRené works as a Science Leader at Unilever’s Safety and Environmental Assurance Centre at Colworth House, Bedfordshire. He qualified initially in mammalian physiology and has postgraduate qualifications in Immunology and Toxicology. He is responsible for advice and guidance on food allergy and allergen risk assessment and management to Unilever Companies, and for leading Unilever’s food allergy research programme. He has authored papers and book chapters on various aspects of food allergy, including risk assessment and management of food allergens. He also currently chairs the ILSI Europe Food Allergy Task Force and is a member of the UK’s Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment.

Simon Flanagan - Senior Consultant Food Allergens, RSSL

Simon FlanaganSimon is the Senior Consultant of RSSL’s Food Safety Division and heads up technical services in the field of allergens. Simon is a biochemist by training who more latterly specialised in immunology. He has spent the last 29 years working within various sectors of the food industry in roles spanning a number of different functions (Research and Development, Quality and Analytical). It was whilst working for a large European infant foods manufacturer that he first became involved in the management of food allergens in the factory to support of label claims.

Since then he has specialised in food allergens and provides technical consultancy and training to numerous blue chip manufacturers and retailers. Simon is a Fellow of the Institute of Food Science and Technology and active member of a number of professional bodies and industry groups (Food and Drink Federation, FoodDrinkEurope, International Life Sciences Institute). He has also published several papers on food allergens and allergen risk assessment. He has recently edited a handbook on food allergen management which was published by Woodhead Publishing in November 2014.

David Pickering - Team Leader, Buckinghamshire and Surrey Trading Standards

David has a wealth of experience and expertise in the areas of food law, food standards and enforcement having worked for Buckinghamshire and Surrey Trading Standards for over 30 years. He is also the joint lead officer for Food and Nutrition for the Trading Standards Institute.

Karen Tonks - Director at Karen Tonks Consultancy Ltd

Karen FSCKaren supports organizations with customer communications and policy development in the areas of health, wellness and labelling. She worked for Tesco for over 27 years providing advice and developing policies on nutrition and health based on the legislation and the available science and evidence.  She was primarily responsible for Nutrition, Health, Claims and Labelling policy for Food and Non-Food and developed the technical aspects of customer health initiatives such as the Tesco Healthy Living Brand and Front of Pack Labelling. She has degrees in Food Science (BSc Hons) and Nutrition (MSc).


Bob Trice - Coeliac UK Board of Governors

Robert TriceBob Trice is an experienced senior marketing and business manager currently working with food and nutrition companies as a mentor, consultant and hands on non executive director. Previously he was employed by a range of multinational food companies, more recently specialising in nutrition - healthcare, natural foods and free from. His last full time role in 2014 was as UK Managing Director for the world's largest gluten free food company.


Alex Turtle - Food Safety & Sectors Executive, Food and Drink Federation

Alex TurtleAlex works as a Food Safety and Sectors Executive in the Regulatory, Science and Health Division of the FDF with responsibility for the area of allergens and the Allergens Steering Group. Along with Secretariat support, his role involves monitoring scientific, technical and regulatory developments, including the study and analysis of relevant UK Government and EU policies and proposals as they relate to allergens for the food and drink industry. Alex also represents FDF on the FoodDrinkEurope Expert Committee on allergens. He also provides a secretariat role for the FDF Biscuit, Cake, Chocolate and Confectionery Sector Group and FDF Ice Cream Sector Group, particularly in relation to regulatory and technical issues. Before joining the FDF, Alex worked as a Regulator Affairs Advisor for both Leatherhead Food Research and Campden BRI.
