Updates to Food Allergen Labelling Guidance

4 May 2023

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) have launched a consultation to obtain feedback from relevant stakeholders on updates to the Technical Guidance on food allergen labelling.

The FSA are seeking views on two key updates, including:

  • The standards for how and when to apply precautionary allergen labelling (PAL).
  • The best practice guidance that “No Gluten Containing Ingredients” (NGCI) statements should not be used.

The Technical Guidance has also been amended to reflect accurate references to food law in England, Wales and Northern Ireland following the UK’s exit from the European Union, in addition to non-technical updates to improve clarity and understanding.

Coeliac UK’s food policy team are reviewing the updates and will be responding to the consultation. They will continue to provide updates on how changes to the Technical Guidance may affect our community.

The FSA is seeking feedback from food businesses, local authority food safety teams, food industry representatives and other organisations or people interested in food hypersensitivity policy.

Written responses from these stakeholders can be submitted to: tech.guidance.consultation@food.gov.uk, until 22nd May 2023.

The revised guidance is set to be published this summer.
