Your Coeliac UK Food Information Service: June Update

17 June 2025

We really appreciate your ongoing support and patience over recent months as we make important changes to our Food Information Service.

As the experts in coeliac disease and the gluten free diet, we are unique in the way that we validate the suitability of products for a gluten free diet. We have increased and improved the number of validation measures, informed by updated labelling legislation and our expertise. This rigour means that you can trust the information that Coeliac UK provides through our Food Information Service.

There have been some unexpected delays to the product migration plan, and we are grateful to our external data processing team for their responsive approach to these challenges. We have been working hard to build in the most efficient and robust quality assessment process for each and every product before releasing the information to our app users.

We’re now able to apply the learnings found through bringing the first 15,000 products back into the service to larger sets of data. The means we can commit to the following:

  • By the end of June, all Tesco products will be available.
  • From 1 July, we’ll then release data sets of approximately 30,000 on a weekly basis until complete

Our priority at Coeliac UK is to support the gluten free community and our team is doing their very best to answer your queries. You can find a wealth of food information and guidance on the Coeliac UK website as well as our Food and Drink Guide.

We will continue to keep our community aware of any product changes, food alerts and product recalls.

Thank you for your continued commitment to the charity and encouragement while we continue to make improvements to this vital service.

Frequently asked questions:

If a product is labelled gluten free, then why are they not all available in the app service yet?

While there are food labelling laws in place to use the term ‘gluten free’ on packaged foods, it is only recommended that products are tested and not mandatory. Although there are also strict manufacturing practices around food safety, we are still validating all gluten free labelled products before including them back into the service.

Products that carry our Crossed Grain trademark, MUST include product testing and we also receive confirmation. As these manufacturers and brands, go above and beyond the current recommendations for labelling a product gluten free, you can be assured these products are suitable for a gluten free diet.

Do you really have to check each product before releasing it back into the service?

In a way yes. We’ve changed, improved and increase the validation measures and we need to make sure it works for all products. That said, we are also utilising machine learning, however, due to the changes we’re still including stricter quality assurances in the roll out phase.

Why are Tesco products being prioritised next?

For the last five years, Tesco products have only been available in our digital service and not in our Food and Drink Guide like some other retailers. We have already included ALDI and M&S and all other retailer brands will be rolled out in the weekly pushes from July.

When will it be complete?

All products and their suitability for a gluten free diet will be available by the end of July.
The additional dietary preference feature will be enabled into the service before the end of August.

When will product information be available on the website?

Our website is the central hub for trusted, expert information and for a number of important services for our community. Which is why we're making important updates over the summer months. The existing website does not support the required improvements being made to the Food Information Service. It’s important that there are no inconsistencies in our Food Information Service across our different channels and so the product search function will be unavailable on our website for the next few months.
