FAQ

Why is Coeliac UK welcoming the decision when it’s still restricting the type of items available? This isn’t a great outcome.

There were three options under consideration as part of the consultation:

  • no change
  • complete removal of access to prescriptions
  • restriction in type of product available.

We believe the government made a reasonable decision at a time when the NHS is facing significant financial challenges. The work undertaken by the Department of Health and Social Care has recognised the need for patients with coeliac disease to have ongoing support to manage their condition, and they have paid attention to the evidence we have put forward about the cost, availability and nutritional contribution of gluten free staples in managing a gluten free diet.

Their decision to retain the core staple items of bread and flour mixes recognises that these items are the most critical for patients with coeliac disease to be able to adhere to the diet. And it also ensures that people on low incomes and in remote areas still have access to these items.
